Silk Spitz Today: Maltipom (Part 3)

The end of the "Seidenspitz" breed

According to records, the Seidenspitz as an independent breed must have had the greatest popularity, distribution and notoriety between 1860-1895. This short period of time in which it was exhibited and thus also registered ends with the establishment of the breed standard for the German Spitz between submission and registration 1900-1906.

So there is the note in the breed identification (breed standard):

The so-called Seidenspitze does not recognize the student council and calls them bastards." [1]

In view of the very small number of litters mentioned again and again and the unspecified health problems of these dogs, it was understandable that the Seidenspitz could not continue in this form. At least at the beginning of the 20th century. Things are a bit different today in the 21st century.

The legacy of silk spitz in the 21st century:

The Maltipom

A description of the (new or old) designer race

Synonyms: Malti-Pom, Pomanese or Pomamees

The Maltipom (Maltese & Pomeranian hybrid breed) is not recognized by the AKC as it is considered a hybrid and not a new breed in its own right. The same applies to recognition in the VDH or FCI.

Maltipom is now recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, the International Designer Canine Registry and the Designer Breed Registry. [2]

The Maltipom weighs approx. 2 - 4.5 kg with a size of 20.5 - 33 cm.

The Spitz heritage shows through again and again in the Maltipom, because he is described as a dog that loves to bark, is active and intelligent. Depending on their parents, Maltipoms can be gentle, playful and friendly or a bit more headstrong, but they are always very affectionate. [3]

In terms of health, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, hypothyroidism and a healthy tooth position must be taken into account with the hybrid breed, as both bring the breed disposition with them.

Maltipom bitch: Gypsy

Her owners describe Gypsy as a bright and active dog who loves to go on new adventures in the woods and fields.

Her favorite place is the beach, where she likes to play in the sand, but she has little use for water. She's a really fast walker for a small dog, which may be because she grew up with a Lurcher (sighthound breed) named Puddles and learned to keep up with her.

Gypsy has a friendly and caring temperament, but can also be territorial when it comes to their food and favorite people.

She is very intelligent and can easily learn new tricks. It's fair to say that Gypsy would make a great watchdog as she barks constantly at passers-by.

She loves to go to dog shows and this year she took first place in the Scruffts heats, which means she will be going to Crufts next year to compete in the Scruffts semi-finals in the Prettiest Bitch category.< /p>
