Origin and influences on the development of the breed

1778 Mention of the Spitz breed in a poem

1800 Description for the Spitz in Cynographica Britannia
Colours: White, black, fawn with light areas and spotted. General size: about 45 cm (about 18 inch)

1882 Draft of a breed standard with division into large spitz and small spitz

1899 Foundation of "Association for German Lace" (VfDS)

1900 Club establishes first statutes and breed identification

The color classification applies to large lace: wolf-colored, white and black; Size: from 45 cm (Wolfspitz) upwards unlimited, from 40 cm (Großspitz)

1906 Adaptation of the standard by the association

Colours: tan, blue and fox red and piebald (other colours) are recognized, all black and white markings are faulty; Size: if possible 45 cm (Wolfspitz) upwards unlimited, if possible 40 cm (Great Spitz)

1910 The German Lace Club (Frankfurt/Main) is accepted into the cartel on December 23, 1910 (predecessor VDH).

1939-1945 During World War II, many club documents are lost and destroyed

1957 Recognition of German Spitz by FCI
Large Spitz and Small Spitz (up to 26 cm), No division between Wolfspitz and Großspitz

Colours: all approved; Proposal for pure color breeding in the General Assembly

1962 Adjustment of the Great Spitz breed standard

Color classification: wolf-colored, white, black and brown; Size: at least 45 cm (Wolfspitz), if possible 40 cm (black, white and brown Great Spitz)

1965 VfDSp decides on May 15, 1965 to separate the Wolfsspitz and Großspitz

1969 Mittelspitz variety is officially recognized in the standard for German Spitz (FCI).

1974 Introduction of the Pomeranian variety

1983 All Wolfsspitz and Großspitz used for breeding must be HD X-rayed

1993 The FCI combines Wolfsspitz and Kees in one standard

2003 Society for the Preservation of Old and Endangered Domestic Breeds e.V.

declares the Großspitz extremely endangered and the Mittelspitz critically endangered

2005 First proven breeding of an American Eskimo Dog in Germany for blood refreshment.

2014 End of color pure breeding in the VDH, color pairings within Großspitz are allowed between black and brown as well as black and white

2018 First proven breeding of an American Eskimo Dog in Austria for blood refreshment.

2019 Foundation of the Association for Spitz and Related Breeds e. V. (VSVR)

2022 Color opening in the VfDS for the Großspitz
